Soul Surfer is the inspiring true story of teen surfer Bethany Hamilton. Bethany lost her left arm in a shark attack and courageously overcame all odds to become a champion again, through her sheer determination and unwavering faith. Bethany (AnnaSophia Robb) was born to surf. A natural talent who took to the waves at a young age, she was leading an idyllic life on Kauai, participating in national surf competitions with her best friend Alana (Lorraine Nicholson), when everything changed. On Halloween morning, a 14-foot tiger shark came out of nowhere and seemed to shatter all her dreams. Soul Surfer reveals Bethany's fight to recover from her ordeal and how she grappled with the question of her future. I hadn’t seen a true story in a while, so I was really looking forward to Soul Surfer—and it didn’t disappoint, especially by the end. It’s the inspiring story of a girl who overcame the odds and showed she had the will to keep living, and that felt incredibly uplifting. Throughout the whole movie, I was rooting for her to find happiness, and the solid cast made it even better, with great performances from Helen Hunt, Kevin Sorbo, Dennis Quaid, and AnnaSophia Robb in the lead role. Even though you kind of know what to expect with this type of film, you still feel every moment with the characters, especially if you have a heart. If you're not completely cold and indifferent, there's something here that will resonate with you.

I don't know if I was moved because it's based on a true story or because of the way it's presented. Either way, I have no doubt that AnnaSophia Robb is a great actress. I'm pleased beyond measure with the cinematography and the choice of supporting characters. It is supercharged by the surfing feats and the fantastic music that adds the perfect tone to every situation. Fortunately, the film does not succumb to melancholy. It oozes energy, competitiveness, and determination. In a way, it is also a great motivation. My compliments.
