True Detective (2014)

English A series that thrilled me in every aspect. For two years, I had read nothing but praise for True Detective and how excellent it was. Now I’ve finally seen it. Nic Pizzolatto delivered a perfect script, the dialogues were polished to perfection, and I admit that I wasn’t bored for a single moment over the entire eight episodes. The atmosphere and the old-school approach to the film were almost breathtaking at times. The two main actors were in a constant battle to see who could deliver the better performance. McConaughey might have edged out slightly with his role, and his philosophical musings and the dialogues in a similar vein with Harrelson were very amusing. I loved how the series was crafted in a mystical and, above all, mysterious manner. Such works are rare, and I welcomed it with pleasure. Even though there weren’t many action sequences, I really enjoyed the series. If you appreciate a gradually intensifying atmosphere that culminates in an incredible way, this is definitely for you. We’ll see what the second season brings. The first season earns a 95% from me. ()

Season 3 (2019) (S03)

English It's hard for me to review this. It has the most in common with the first season, which I still consider the best, but the third installment simply and plainly did not reach that high standard. Don’t get me wrong, it is still an excellent product from HBO. Of course, the main characters contribute the most; Mahershala Ali gives a powerhouse performance, but I was even more impressed by Stephen Dorff. I would never have guessed it, but his performance really blew me away, perhaps partly due to the script, which gave him quality lines. I fell in love with his character. The mysterious aura of the entire case managed to captivate me; Nic Pizzolatto knows how to make a high-quality detective story. I give full marks for the atmosphere of the American pessimistic countryside, as I experienced quite a few unpleasant feelings. So why only four stars? I don’t consider the resolution a failure per se, but with such a buildup, I was expecting a major twist that would shuffle the cards and leave me saying WOW. That didn’t happen, but I still recommend it. There aren’t many solid detective stories around these days. I give it 84%. ()

Night Country (2024) (S04)

English Honestly, I don’t know whether to laugh or cry after reading the reviews here. Yes, the fourth season is probably the weakest addition to the True Detective saga. On the other hand… giving it a Boo! rating? Seriously, people? A bit of common sense would be appreciated. Night Country still has certain production qualities. Firstly, it has top-notch audiovisuals that meet the highest standards. The snowy Alaskan setting (well, Iceland actually :D) certainly helps. Second, the actors… Say what you will, but Jodie Foster isn’t ready for retirement yet. And John Hawkes in a supporting role was also a delight. Otherwise, I quite liked the story, although it’s a pity that the main plot sometimes takes a backseat to unnecessary subplots (that was quite frustrating). I also enjoyed the mysterious atmosphere, even though it became a bit overwhelming at times. Fortunately, the creators handled it well and provided us with a rational explanation. All in all… It won’t blow you away, but as a decent crime drama, it serves its purpose. I give it a 6/10. ()
