Set in the south of France in 1879, this is the remarkable true story of Cheval, a humble postman who dreams of life through the wonders of the magazines and postcards he delivers. When he falls in love with the beautiful Philomène, the arrival of their baby daughter, Alice, inspires him to build a castle fit for a princess. (Palace Films)

English A fascinating story that truly deserved to be brought to the screen. I had no idea about this tale, so the film definitely hit the mark for me. Right after watching, I found myself researching where this Ideal Palace is located, and it’s now on my list of places to visit if I ever get the chance to travel again. The film is meticulously told, with Jacques Gamblin delivering an outstanding performance as the self-absorbed Ferdinand Cheval. However, despite Cheval’s complex character, the film portrays him rather simply, which is my only critique of an otherwise captivating story from France. ()
