Le Livre de Boba Fett

The first few episodes were pretty underwhelming — I had to adjust to new characters and get used to Boba, who I initially found off-putting, partly because of his name. But it wasn’t just the name; in those early episodes, he didn’t do much to win me over or fully capture my interest. The one thing that kept me watching was the setting, which convinced me things would get better. And they did. About halfway through the series, familiar faces like The Mandalorian and Grogu showed up, bringing with them a surge of action that didn’t let up until the finale. After a rocky start, the series culminated in an epic ending that I didn’t see coming. While Boba Fett may be a sidekick in the grander scheme, this series ended up feeling closer to The Mandalorian than I expected. (2022-03-14)

A thoroughbred Star Wars type western where the filmmakers more or less do what they want and willingly sacrifice a consistent basic story just to please the fans. Boba is full of flashbacks, it simply steps aside for two episodes to tell us what Skywalker’s new pupil is up to and demolishes Tatooine in Godzilla vs. Kong style. It’s enjoyable to watch, but Star Wars could do better. (2022-02-11)

Hang in there for three and a half episodes, I would advise anyone who isn't (justifiably) excited by the beginning of Boba Fett. Comparisons to The Mandalorian are simply unavoidable, and as much as you may think you like Boba, the story itself doesn't really offer much. It's probably no coincidence that the best episode is the fifth, in which Fett doesn't show up at all. Pedro Pascal in a helmet simply plays better than Temuera Morrison without a helmet and quite often without clothes, who is trumped every now and then by a supporting character, for example, the brilliant Cad Bane. It's definitely not a total flop and I can't really complain about the second half of the series (Robert Rodriguez even directed the final episode so well that I didn't even guess it was him), but I'd rather see Boba Fett as a supporting character in the next Mandalorian. Not good at all. I've never understood the popularity of Boba Fett. From the very beginning, I was concerned about whether this particular character could pull off his own series. Well, my concerns were justified. Unfortunately, everything about this spells mediocre: flat characters, a boring story that doesn’t go anywhere, slow pacing, and a completely chaotic narrative style. The show has a similarly lame concept as the sequel trilogy. After all, this is where Star Wars has been failing since Disney took over. It’s also the reason why episodes 5 and 6 might not even count in the rating of the series as a whole. They're basically regular episodes of Season 3 of The Mandalorian. The characters' motivations, personalities, and development – none of it works. And if that’s not bad enough, Temuera Morrison in the lead role is absolutely useless. What I can commend are the visuals and soundtrack, but that's painfully little. I'm looking forward to Season 3 of The Mandalorian, but one series reviving the character of Boba Fett was more than enough. (2022-02-13)

Definitely the best Star Wars-themed series so far, especially since there isn't much competition. The broader story spread across Grogu and the Mandalorian contributes to the narrative, because it helps the universe take on a more coherent dimension. Temuera Morrison was pretty good, he's still got it, especially when it comes to charisma, and you can’t ask him at his age to move like an athlete. The natural face of Luke Skywalker in the penultimate episode is the temporary highlight of the 3D scanning, few bugs notwithstanding. The only weakness I see in Boba Fett's young gang members, they are supremely unlikeable, they look like teenagers aimlessly hanging out in a shopping mall. (2022-07-15)
