Ant-Man (2015)

English Ant-Man is a huge surprise for me this year. As one of this year's few blockbusters, it didn't impress me much with its trailer, it was very sterile and uninteresting and was a shoo-in for the weakest Marvel movie, but oh how wrong I was. Ant-Man is very creative, inventive, overly funny to the point I was sorry I couldn't roll on the carpet in the cinema (that was taken care of by the discovery of Michael Peña, every time he was on screen he put a smile on my face). The action is clear, detailed and I've not had the opportunity to see action from this perspective anywhere before, so it was pleasantly refreshing. Paul Rudd portrays an ordinary guy, he's no chiseled model, but just an ordinary struggling father who has bad luck, you can easily relate to him being a likable guy. Evangeline Lilly is a seductive and promising babe, Michael Douglas is actually the only acting class in Ant-Man with an amazing facelift at the beginning, and Corey Stoll, I have a minor complaint about this guy, he didn't really stand out for me as the villain (he didn't have much room either), Marvel has pulled out bigger aces in this area. But anyway I dare say Ant-Man is the funniest and most entertaining Marvel movie ever. The highlight is definitely the unusual finale and Scott's heist skills.

Murder in the First (1995)

English An excellent courtroom film and definitely among the better ones. The film has a lot of great things, the main ones being the great cast where, lead by an insane Kevin Bacon, a perfect Christian Slater, who took my breath away with his brilliant and excellent speech, Gary Oldman as the tough warden of Alcatraz. I also liked William H. Macy as the prosecutor, he gave another admirable performance. The setting of the squalid Alcatraz and the fact that it is based on a true story only enhances an already very solid film. It's a bit short of a full score. 80%.

Nothing to Lose (1997)

English An excellent action comedy. Tim Robbins' life comes crashing down when he catches his wife with another man, and from that point on things go downhill. He is ambushed in his car by a street thug, Martin Lawrence, but he takes his breath away with his fearlessness and hits the gas, giving us a great buddy road movie where a cultured and respectable man becomes criminal number one. I laughed solidly thanks to perfect moments, fine twists, irony and dark humour. I'll never forget the dancing officer. 80%.

State of Grace (1990)

English A gritty and quality gangster film with an A-list cast lead by Sean Penn, Ed Harris and Gary Oldman. It really fascinates me how every thriller from the 90s has a packed cast, almost always with at least three actors, and nowadays we are happy to have one A-list actor, which is a shame. The story is rather predictable, we don't get too many twists and turns, but it's properly gritty, the atmosphere of Hell's Kitchen is properly grim, and the film flows nicely, so I can recommend it. 75%

Tokyo Fist (1995)

English Too much of a freak for me. The combination of boxing and gore looked promising, but the whole thing is so weirdly contrived and unentertaining. With blood spurting on all sides for no reason. Just your typical Japanese madness only for experimental viewers.

Silenced (2011)

English I thought it would be a proper drama, but in the end I didn't get burned, and thanks to the interesting subject, the film reaches into thriller territory and we get some really gritty, emotional, vicious and cruel stuff. An excellent story that pulls you into the plot and makes you go through different phases where you cheer, believe, pray, hate, scream, curse and cry. Yes I don't remember a film resonating with me that strongly and the fact that this one is spiced up with a trial, which I, as a lover of legal thrillers, welcome with open arms, the rating was decided long ago. The fact that the film is based on true events that lead to changes in the Korean constitution is just a nice cherry on an already quite excellent cake. 100%

Sea Fog (2014)

English I've been putting this film off for a while, boat thrillers like A Hijacking and Captain Phillips usually turn out badly for me – they are not my cup of tea – but I liked Sea Fog from the start probably because of the film's provenance. A decent premise, an engaging plot, nicely portrayed character psychology and after the impressive twist, the atmosphere thickens nicely, the captain goes mad and a decent crew killing spree begins. Though it's a great pity we are deprived of all the brutal shots, I would have expected some juicy brutality from Korea, I'm sure if they had pushed the envelope here like in I Saw the Devil, this film would have shaken everyone's rankings! But it's still nicely disturbing, suspenseful and quite gritty. A good film. 80%.

Army of Darkness (1992)

English The wackiest part. I laughed so hard for the first 30 minutes that I was thinking about a full score. Ash kicked ass, but the last 30 minutes significantly reduced my joy. Okay for its time, but rather ridiculous today. 65%.

Evil Dead 2 (1987)

English Still decent for its age, but too far-fetched. I can't shake the impression that it feels like a fantasy fairytale, brought to life at least by Ash, who is a fun character. The scene where he mounts the motorcycle is great, but I don't recall him dropping wisecracks like everybody says, after all, he spends the better half of the film alone in a cabin! The blood is significantly reduced, so only 3* here. 65%.

The Evil Dead (1981)

English So I caught up on my biggest and hopefully last horror outstanding debt. I've been heavily skeptical of this film for three years now, it got worse after the remake became my favourite, but in the end The Evil Dead is a decent demonic genre film even today. The visual effects weren't too bad after all, there’s also quite a lot of gore for its age and the atmosphere is quite dark, though it dragged before the film got going. When I compare it to Halloween where blood is a foreign concept to the filmmakers and it is only two years younger, I have to give it a strong rating here. The remake, however, is well beyond insane. 70%.
