For his unconventional rendering of the archetypal story of the Beauty and the Beast - with the appearances by Don Juan, the timeless womaniser - Manoel de Oliveira chose an equally unconventional genre: film opera. There is an alienating Brechtian narrator-guiding the audiences through this black-humoured piece produced by Paulo Branco and complemented with a score by Jo?o Paes, an outstanding Portuguese composer of the time.
